Securing an iPad for Kid-Friendly Use – Configuring Family Sharing
Family Sharing allows the parent/guardian to control screen time, manage app purchases, set content restrictions, and share purchases across all registered iOS devices. It is suitable if you as the parent also own a iOS device.
How to set up Family Sharing
Pre-requisite – children’s devices must be using their own Apple ID. If they are setup with yours, they will either need to have the Apple ID changed (you will register an account for them below) or local restrictions setup
Set Up Family Sharing on the Parent’s Device
The parent will act as the Family Organiser. This process is initiated from the parent’s iPhone or iPad.
Go to Settings.
Tap your Apple ID name at the top.
Select Family Sharing.
Tap Set Up Your Family.
Follow the onscreen instructions to set up the family group.
You will be prompted to invite family members. You can either create Apple IDs for your children (if they are under 13 or not already setup with one) or invite them to join Family Sharing if they already have Apple IDs.
*Note, if you are creating a new Apple ID for them they will need an email address (you can make one in the process) and a phone number for verification (your phone number)When adding a new child it will request you turn on “Ask To Buy” and location sharing. Recommend doing this.
Ask To Buy – ensures children cannot download anything new or make purchases without your permission.
Add Family Members
Adding more family members if you didn’t complete above
Tap Add Family Member.
Choose one of the following:
Invite via iMessage: Send an invitation to family members who already have Apple IDs (such as your children if they have their own Apple IDs).
Create an Apple ID for a Child: If your children don’t have Apple IDs, select this option. You’ll need to provide details, such as their birthdate and parental consent.
Follow the prompts to complete adding each child.
